To quit a job in The Sims 4, open your Sim’s phone, go to the Career (briefcase) menu and choose Quit Job. You can do the same from any computer under Career. Elder Sims also get a Retire option, which pays a small daily pension. If you would rather skip the menus, the cheat careers.remove_career removes a career straight away.
How to quit a job with the phone
- Select the Sim who should quit.
- Click the phone icon in the bottom left corner.
- Open the Career menu (the briefcase icon).
- Choose Quit Job and confirm.
The Sim leaves the career at once. The job disappears from the Career panel and there are no more work hours or pay.

Click any computer on the lot, choose Career and then Quit Job. The result is the same as with the phone, so use whichever is closer.
How to retire an elder Sim
Elders are never forced to retire. They can keep working and earning full pay for the rest of their lives. When an elder has a career, the phone’s Career menu shows a Retire option. A retired Sim gets a pension every day at the time they would normally have come home from work. According to the Sims Wiki, the pension is about 28.6 percent of the pay from the job they retired from.
A retired Sim can take a new job later, but the pension stops when they do. They can retire again from the new career.

How to switch to a different career
You do not need to quit first. Open the phone or a computer, choose Find a Job and pick the new career. A Sim can only hold one full-time career, so the game asks you to confirm that your Sim leaves the old one. Teen part-time jobs and freelance work
Teens with a part-time job quit the same way: phone or computer, Career, Quit Job. Freelancer careers also use the Career menu. If the Sim has an active gig, finish or cancel it before you quit so you do not lose work in progress.
How to remove a career with cheats
- Press
Ctrl + Shift + C(on Mac:Cmd + Shift + C) to open the cheat console. - Type
testingcheats trueand press Enter. - Type
careers.remove_career <career name>, for examplecareers.remove_career writer, and press Enter.
The Sim must be working in that career for the cheat to work. Related cheats from the same family:
careers.add_career <career name>: joins a career.careers.promote <career name>: promotes your Sim. At the top level it gives a pay rise instead.careers.demote <career name>: demotes your Sim.
FAQ
Why can’t I find the Quit Job button?
Make sure the right Sim is selected and that they actually have a career. Elders see Retire next to Quit Job. If the menu still looks wrong, a mod that changes careers may be the cause. Test with mods turned off.
Does my Sim lose skills when they quit?
No. Skills such as Charisma, Cooking or Writing stay with the Sim. The career level and job performance are tied to the job.
Do elders have to retire?
No. Elders can keep working full time. Retiring is a choice.
Can a retired Sim go back to work?
Yes, but they lose the pension from their old job.
