How to Edit Relationships in The Sims 4: CAS, cas.fulleditmode and the ModifyRelationship Cheat

You can edit relationships in The Sims 4 in two ways. In Create a Sim, set family ties (parent, child, sibling, roommate or spouse) when you make a household. In a running game, type testingcheats true and then cas.fulleditmode, Shift-click a Sim and choose Modify in CAS to change family ties, or use the ModifyRelationship cheat to set friendship and romance to any value from -100 to 100. No mods needed.

Set relationships in Create a Sim

When a household has more than one Sim, Create a Sim lets you link them. Click the relationship icon next to the household portraits at the bottom of the screen and pick a label for each pair:

• Parent
• Child
• Sibling
• Roommate
• Spouse

The game checks ages, so a teen cannot be a spouse or a parent of an adult. Set the direct links only (parent and child, spouse); the game works out grandparents, in-laws and cousins by itself. With Growing Together or Lovestruck you can also pick a relationship dynamic here once the basic tie is set (see below).

Edit relationships in a running game

Open the cheat console first:

• PC: Ctrl + Shift + C
• Mac: Cmd + Shift + C
• PlayStation and Xbox: hold all four shoulder buttons at once

Type testingcheats true and press Enter. The cheats below need it.

Change family ties with cas.fulleditmode

1. Type cas.fulleditmode and press Enter.
2. Hold Shift and click the Sim you want to edit, then choose Modify in CAS.
3. Open the relationship panel at the bottom and change the labels, just as when creating a household.
4. Save and return to the game.

Full edit mode unlocks everything in Create a Sim, including age, name, traits and family ties. Be careful with family changes: making two Sims siblings also changes who the game lists as their parents and children, and the family tree can get tangled. Check the tree before you save.

Set friendship and romance with ModifyRelationship

The format is:

ModifyRelationship FirstName1 LastName1 FirstName2 LastName2 Amount Type

Amount is a number from -100 to 100 and is added to the current value. Type is one of:

Example: to make Bob Pancakes and Eliza Pancakes best of friends, type ModifyRelationship Bob Pancakes Eliza Pancakes 100 LTR_Friendship_Main. For a breakup, use -100 with LTR_Romance_Main. Names are case sensitive, and Sims with the same first name need their full names to be told apart.

What the numbers mean

The Sims 4 has two bars for every pair of Sims: friendship and romance. The friendship bar sets the platonic label:

Romance labels depend on both bars. With friendship above 60, romance from 25 to 50 shows Lovebirds, 50 to 75 Lovers and 75 to 100 Soulmates. Romance below 0 with high friendship gives It’s Complicated, and high romance with friendship below -20 gives the Enemies with Benefits label. So if a cheat gives you a label you did not expect, adjust the other bar.

Since patch 142, relationship gains also depend on age. Two teens gain from the same interaction one and a half times as fast as an adult and a teen, and anything involving an infant is halved. The cheat ignores this; it just adds the amount you type.

Relationship dynamics, boundaries and attraction

Three newer systems sit on top of the two bars, and you can edit them too:

• Family dynamics (Growing Together): Close, Distant, Difficult or Jokesters between any two family members, plus Supportive, Permissive or Strict between parent and child. Set them in Create a Sim after the family tie, or let them form in play.
• Romantic dynamics (Lovestruck): the same idea for partners. They change which romantic interactions Sims pick on their own.
• Romantic boundaries (base game, July 2024 update): use the Relationship social category when you click another Sim to ask about boundaries, ask to be partners, propose or break up. Boundaries decide what counts as cheating, from flirting to kissing to everything.
• Attraction (Lovestruck): a hidden one-sided score from -100 to 100 built from Turn-Ons and Turn-Offs. Personality turn-ons count 30 points each, skill and activity ones 20, and looks like hair color 10. A magnet icon in the Relationships panel shows whether a Sim is attracted. You edit it by changing a Sim’s Turn-Ons and Turn-Offs in Create a Sim, not with a cheat.

FAQ

Can I edit relationships after the household is created?

Yes. cas.fulleditmode plus Modify in CAS changes family ties, and ModifyRelationship changes the friendship and romance bars. Both work at any time, on any Sim you can Shift-click.

What is the fastest way to make two Sims spouses?

Full edit mode: set them as Spouse in the relationship panel. If you want the wedding, instead push romance to 100 with the cheat and use the Propose and Elope interactions.

Does the cheat work on console?

Yes. Open the console with all four shoulder buttons, enable testingcheats and type the same commands. Typing long names on a controller is slow, so set up families in Create a Sim where you can.

Do I need a mod?

No. The base game covers family ties, friendship, romance and boundaries. Mods such as Romance Reloaded add more detailed attraction, and MC Command Center can edit relationships from a menu, but check our mod status tracker after every patch.

Can I edit a pet’s relationship?

Yes, with LTR_SimtoPet_Friendship_Main for the Sim-to-pet bond. Pets in Create a Sim can only have family dynamics changed. See our guide to getting a pet.

A relationship shows wrong or missing. Can I fix it?

Usually. Open full edit mode and set the tie again, or run ModifyRelationship to put the bars where they should be. If the family tree stays broken, check whether a mod is interfering before you blame the save.
